Sacraments
The whole life of the Church flows from the Sacraments. These are visible, tangible signs given to us by Jesus Christ to reflect the invisible reality of God’s grace, love, and mercy.
Jesus instituted 7 sacraments, which are listed below. Check out the links below for more information about the opportunities to prepare for and receive these Sacraments at St. Catherine of Siena Parish.
Baptism
Baptism is the first of the three Sacraments of Initiation, through which we take on our new identity in Jesus Christ. As children, teens, and adults come to the waters of life, they begin their spiritual journey and become part of God's holy Church.
Eucharist (First Holy Communion)
The Eucharist defines the Catholic life — when we receive it, we receive Jesus Himself. It is the second of the Sacraments of Initiation, and the source and summit of our faith. It goes beyond simply knowing Him or having a relationship with Him; it is deep intimacy, as we receive Him physically each time we take Communion at Mass.
Confirmation
Confirmation is the Sacrament through which we receive the Holy Spirit to become stronger, more perfect Christians and true witnesses of Jesus Christ. It is the third of the Sacraments of Initiation, bringing to fulfillment what began in Baptism.
As candidates come forward to be confirmed, they ask God for the zeal to profess their faith and personally take on responsibility for their ongoing religious journey. Their love of Jesus propels them to participate regularly in Sunday Mass, continue their spiritual formation within the parish community, serve others, evangelize, and defend the faith in word and deed.
Reconciliation
In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we receive God's loving mercy. Although it goes by other names — Penance, Confession — the gift the Lord gives is the same. Jesus gave the Apostles the authority to forgive sins (John 20:21–23). Through their successors, the bishops and priests, God gives His Church the ability to wash away our sins each time we humbly ask for forgiveness.
Anointing of the Sick (Last Rites)
In the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, God offers His healing power. This Sacrament is administered to the dying, the gravely ill, and those facing serious surgery. The priest prays over the person and anoints their head and hands with chrism, granting spiritual strength and peace amid suffering and illness.
Matrimony
The Sacrament of Marriage renews the covenant Jesus made with His Church. It brings abundant blessing to husband and wife — a love that overflows into the life they build together, the children they raise, and the joy they bring to family, friends, and the Church.
Holy Orders
The Sacrament of Holy Orders calls men to share in the priesthood of Jesus Christ. Through the laying of hands, the Bishop calls upon the Holy Spirit to consecrate men for service to the Church.
